Letter to Mom is Bittersweet - day 10 UBC Challenge

Dear Mom,

I began working on this gift back before I moved to the Austin area from Lewisville. It was going to be your Christmas present for 2013...instead, I am sending it to you for Mother's Day 2014.

Here on the pages of the book I created, I have shared a little bit of your life along with the memories - both good and maybe some bad, I really don't know...only you will know.

It's day 10 in the Ultimate Blog Challenge. Earlier today, I was able to set time aside to begin the purging process of my lateral filing cabinet. This is something I do at the beginning of the new year. Yes, I'm a few weeks behind...but I was able to get it done today. Thank goodness!

My crafting room thanks me too! Between this tub out and that tub out while I work on the current Junk Journal, it looks like the Tasmanian Devil has whirled through here. At least now, I can see the floor, my desktop, and the desk behind me. That's always a good feeling! Especially for a crafter. Can any of you relate?

I knew that recycle day was soon approaching so I wanted to get this done sooner than later. As I went through each file folder, pulling this and pulling that, making a new folder for this and a new one for that - I ran across a letter I had written my mom on May 7, 2014.

I glanced at the letter atop of many other file folders that I had already cleaned out. Many of the folders remained the same, only lighter after today. I read through the first page...set it aside and continued working on my folders.

Picking the letter back up after a little bit, I began reading the next page...

I spent many, many hours in the back while living in Lewisville, you would always question why I always went to the back after work. Here I was working on a Christmas gift for you but couldn't say what it was I was doing...I wanted it to be a surprise. Mom, you never understood why I wanted to be in my own space in the wee hours of the night, but after you see your gift, you will understand.

one of the layouts I had made for mom's gift

I hope you enjoy looking through the different pages I have created as much as I had looking for just the right pictures. I put some serious pictures as well as some quirky ones, I hope you get a laugh out of them, and maybe for a moment, you can step back in time when you were happy and at peace. I found myself chucking a time or two, too and I'm sure you might even shed a tear, as I did.

Mom, I have always had a lot of questions without any answers and I thought one day, I might find them...it's evident to me now, that day will never come and the one person who holds them, is YOU.

Setting the letter to the side once again, I finished up the filing cabinet and started cleaning off the other desk. I have two desks in my crafting room. The one I use and then the one that sets behind me with other things on it. Glue Books, Journals, cardstock, paper stock, a catch-all, etc.

I stopped. I turned around, picked up the letter again, and read it completely.

Mom, you know firsthand I am a fighter. I don't give up easily...this has been a true test for me as my first reaction was to say, to hell with it all and go about my merry way, but I can't do that. (I was battling Stage 4 Thyroid Cancer) I am resilient! I don't give up easily and if I have breath, there will be HOPE in my life to beat this thing called cancer.

Mom, I love you. I don't have the energy level in my body to deal with the family dynamics of chaos and negativity any longer. I need understanding and support for me just as much as the next person in our family. I've never been one to hold grudges and I'm not going to start now. I have so many questions without any answers but continue to choose to move forward. I have forgiven and I have moved on more times than anyone in this family and no one understands that. I'm continually being judged for things I've done many, many, many years ago by those who look me in the eyes and say, 'I love you'. I've had so many losses from people who live and breathe because they hold onto the past. They judge and they hold onto the words from others above anything I have said to set the record straight. Yet, I am always the one in the wrong...

Mom, I never understood why you said, "you felt your purpose in life was taken from you". I'm sorry you have scars in your heart and on your mind from emotional and mental pain that has been inflicted on you over and over and over. I'm sorry for the role I played in that hurt and pain. People don't deserve to be treated poorly. Mom, you ARE a wonderful human being...you have a lot of love, compassion, and a giving heart. I love you, mom...

Please accept this book as your Mother's Day present 2014 and know that I love you VERY much. I miss you. I miss seeing you. I miss your soft hands and your long-drawn-out hugs. I have those memories tucked away deep into my heart and my mind and will never lose sight of any of them.

My mom had just had emergency surgery to repair a ruptured colon. I was driving back and forth from the Austin area to DFW (Dallas/Ft Worth) to see her and check on her health care every weekend. She was in the hospital for thirty days, then in a rehab facility for another 30 days. This was in the latter part of September 2013.

In June of 2013, I relocated to the Round Rock, Texas area for a new position in the Mental Health Field. I had previously been working at one of the 9 State Hospitals in Texas for Behavioral Health. The new position I accepted opened up as a result of the company receiving a new grant to extend their mental health services.  At the time of my relocation, my family didn't move with me as I moved first to start my job, find a place to live, and get settled. Then they were going to join me. Within three months of moving (by myself), I learned I had cancer. Instead of returning to Lewisville, we decided my family would join me as soon as possible. Mom didn't want to move to the RR area, so we moved her back to Amarillo with my sister. This was December 2013.

Per the doctor's advice, as sick as my mom was - they advised me 'not' to tell her about my cancer. For me, the cancer was fast and furious...and time was of the essence. My youngest daughter and I were traveling back and forth to MD Anderson, Houston, TX for treatment. I refrained to tell mom what was going on with me...looking back at that decision, I can see it was a huge mistake not telling her what was going on with me.  Mom didn't understand why she was moving back to Amarillo without seeing me. She couldn't even talk to me during this time, I was that sick.

Unspoken words. Spoken words. Hearts were torn apart...things were said to my mom that I'll never understand to this day. Words that drove walls of resentment up between the both of us. Anguish, hurt, with no understanding. There were no words to make either one of us understand the events of the recent months in 2013.

I was focused on my health and getting the treatment I needed. Mom never knew anything was wrong. We were protecting her because she was frail. She was feeble. She was dealing with a difficult recovery in her life too from the ruptured colon. We thought we were going to lose her a few times, but she was tough and pulled through. It was during this time, my sister and I learned that she had lost a baby. Neither one of us knew...

My mom and I were never close growing up. So much of my life's story, I don't understand. My mom saw me right after I was born, then again in November '62. Then she was gone again...her mom and stepfather raised me until they died in the 70's. Mom was gone for many years in the beginning...then again when I was in the 4th grade. I didn't see mom after that until they removed me from class in the 7th grade. It was then when I began hating her with a passion.

me and mom, Nov. 1962

I continued reading the letter I had written that day in 2014 with tears streaming down my face...

Mom, please accept this book as your Mother's Day present 2014 and know that I love you VERY much. I miss you. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about you. You ARE and will ALWAYS be forever in my heart and forever on my mind.

                                                                    Happy Mother’s Day!

                                                                    Love,

                                                                    *****

Continuing to sit at my desk trying to compose my thoughts, I soon realized the words I wrote my mother on that day in May...mean more to me today, than they did then. Mom will be gone for 1 year on the 28th of this month.

Because of my health in the latter months of 2013 through 2014, it wasn't until early 2015 that I was able to see my mother after relocating to the Round Rock area. My youngest daughter took me to see her in the spring of 2015. We didn't tell my mom we were coming to Amarillo. We surprised her and boy, was she surprised.

She told me after the shock of seeing me standing there in her doorway, that she thought she would never see me again. That was in 2015...here I am in 2021 and I will never see her again.

I love you mom, I miss you...so many things left unsaid. So many questions with no answers. So much pain left unresolved.

How many of you are dealing with unresolved issues today? How many of you have a void in your life because of loss over a loved one because of hurtful words spoken? Have you tried to make amends, ask for forgiveness, or even forgave the others who have hurt you? If not, how come?

I'm thankful today that mom and I were able to put our differences aside, ask one another for forgiveness, and had what little time we had to shower each other with love and gratitude. I don't hold any anger or resentments towards mom for all the 'stuff' inflicted on my life for so many years when she was there and in her absence.

Many times, those things were always never spoken of...they were swept under the rug and forgotten. Many of those memories today are still very raw in my mind as I am the one who lived through them. They molded me into the person I am today. They pushed me to be resilient. They drove me to dig deep and fight to be the bigger person. They also taught me humbleness, forgiveness, and gave me a sense of hope. Hope that things would not always be as they were but would be what I turned them into being. Those very same hurts were the catalyst of pushing me forward to grow stronger in my faith. It was faith that got me through the tough times in life. It IS faith that gets me through today...

I placed the letter back in the folder and tucked it away in the filing cabinet. I smiled and looked around my crafting room where I have tender memories of mom all over the place.

The Angel Doll I gave her shortly after I got married at 17 years old.

The singing bear that sings, "I Hope You Dance" by Lee Ann Womack.

The Thomas Kincaid floral arrangement that I gave her a few years ago. She felt bad, because it got knocked off her dresser and broke, but they glued it back together.

Her ashes set close to the flower arrangement. Tucked away out of harms way up on the shelf...

In my bedroom, is the shadow box I made with all of the handcrafted things I had made and sent to her over the years. They were all sent back to me after mom's death. She had kept these close to her heart in her room at the Nursing Home. Inside of the shadow box is the Memory Album I made myself for Mothers Day 2020. There is also a Journal I sent mom years ago. She has a few things written inside of it...

I'm thankful today that mom and I were able to move past all the hurts, the pain that was inflicted by both of us at different times in our lives before she passed away. I still wonder at times though, if she ever truly knew just how much I loved her. I will never know...that makes my heart sad.

Don't allow resentment, anger, or pride to stand in the way of making amends with people you love. We are not promised tomorrow. Don't wait until it's too late.

Hello Friday...! It's a NEW day. Thank goodness. Where do we go from here? Lives shattered. Lives altered. Democracy challenged. Security challenged. Leadership in shambles...and yet, all I can say is - BUT GOD

Ten Things of Thankfulness today...do I have ten things to be thankful for this week? No, I have more than ten. I have a lifetime of thankfulness. I am thankful I am still living, breathing, and that I possess the power within me to know what is right and what is wrong.

I am thankful GOD still SITS ON THE THRONE.

I am thankful I CAN PRAY (loudly or silently).

Day 27 - A Song That Breaks My Heart

Day 27 in the Song Challenge. The daily prompt was 'name a song that breaks my heart'.

That's easy enough...Unbreak My Heart by Toni Braxton. My heart has been shattered by love and by my family in the past. This song says it all.

Don't leave me in all this pain

Don't leave me out in the rain

Come back and bring back my smile
Come and take these tears away
I need your arms to hold me now
The nights are so unkind
Bring back those nights when I held you beside me
Un-break my heart

Say you'll love me again

Undo this hurt you caused
When you walked out the door
And walked out of my life
Un-cry these tears
I cried so many nights
Un-break my heart
My heart
Take back that sad word goodbye

Bring back the joy to my life

Don't leave me here with these tears
Come and kiss this pain away
I can't forget the day you left
Time is so unkind
And life is so cruel without you here beside me
Un-break my heart

Say you'll love me again

Undo this hurt you caused
When you walked out the door
And walked out of my life

It's hard picking up the pieces to a broken, shattered heart. Some days it is as though it will never feel love again. Trust me, I know...I have had to pick up the pieces several times. The most recent was in 2019 - I did not think my heart would or could ever love again. Yet alone, trust. It isn't the same as it was, but each day I work towards repairing that heartache with love for another human being. The very one who shattered it, to begin with. Can I? Will I? Time will tell. Until then, I try...

I think the words Toni Braxton sings says it all - "Say you'll love me again, undo this hurt you caused". How does a person undo hurt that completely destroys another human being? I'm still trying to figure that one out...and it is hard!!! Nothing ever goes back the way it was. It will either be just going through the motions, just settling, calling it quits, or be stronger than it ever was. In the meantime...let me just be

Day 15 - What Brings You Peace

Day 15 in the Self-Love Challenge hosted by Pinkmama's Place/Pam Allen.

The prompt was "What Brings You Peace".

There isn't just one thing that brings peace into my life. However, with that said, the utmost number 1 thing is my relationship with Jesus Christ. First and foremost above anything else I can think of.

Spending quality time with friends and family.

Being able to smile on a daily basis.

Knowing that I matter.

Being okay with past mistakes. Learning from them and not repeating it.

Being able to forgive self on a daily basis for whatever it is.

Being able to LOVE me first and foremost.

How about you? What brings you peace?

Day 13 - When Do You Feel Most Loved? Self-Love Challenge

I am participating in the Self Love Challenge hosted by Pinkmama's Place/Pam Allen. Today we are on day 13. The prompt was "when do you feel most loved"?

If I have said it once, I have said it multiple times - this challenge has squeezed me on several of the prompts. I am finding myself processing emotions and places in my heart that once were not an issue. Thanks, Pinkmama's Place!!! LOL

Ruminating over the daily prompt, my mind thinks about different times in my life. For instance, participating also in the Song Challenge hosted by The Mommies Review, we were supposed to name a song we would have liked played at our wedding. I found several photos of my marriage in 1994 the other day. I immediately thought about that time in my life. I was incredibly happy, and I felt very loved. Sadly, all those feelings were short very short-lived.

I also thought about the times I gave birth to my three beautiful children. I fell instantly in love with them and they with me. Again, life has happened and the older two are no longer a part of my life. Their choices... (sometimes I wonder if I am the problem). Why can't I be loved the way I give love?

Answering this question “when do I feel the most loved” today is exceedingly difficult at this season in my life. If you had posed this question to me in the first quarter of 2019 - I could have without a doubt answered it quickly. Today, it is quite challenging, to say the least. HONESTLY!!! I have people in my life who say they love me - who have also hurt me to the core...how do I trust that? Do they ever gain my trust again? It is hard...

People have conditions for love...I am no exception. All who are a part of my life, all have conditions on their love for me...I think the only way I will get around this question is to 'love myself for me'. At least this way, I am accountable for my feelings, my actions, and my choices.  I will not feel the betrayal of the blindside or hear the lies that come from choices made by others. Especially when they have been called out on them. I cannot tell you how irate lies make me feel...I despise them with a burning passion. They hurt, they destroy, and they kill the innermost parts of a person's heart.

When I feel the most loved is when I am at peace with myself. When I have a clear understanding of my choices and when I hold myself accountable for my own actions. That is WHEN I feel most loved...on one hand, that is sad and on the other – it is self-preservation for my sanity.

I wish I could trust when others say they 'love' me, but I have been hurt one too many times by those who are supposed to love me. For now, the only love I trust is that of my Heavenly Father...He will sustain me until I take my last breath.

Day 7 - Ways I Can Stop the Negative Beliefs About Myself

Day 7 - Today in the Self-Love Challenge put hosted by Pinkmama's Place, the prompt was - list 3 ways you can stop the negative beliefs you have about yourself.

My oh my...this Self-Love Challenge seems to get harder and harder each day. Not because of the prompts, but because of what it is creating internally for me and others alike.
The prompts make it so that the person answering it literally must look inside their heart and soul to process what is there. For me, it is bringing things up that I have processed before but a recent situation opened the wounds back up. I guess I really did not process the feelings again after the betrayal and hurt occurred.
The Self-Love Challenge is right on time. This is giving me time to self-reflect so I can make choices that need to be made as hard as they are.
The first way I can stop the negative beliefs I have about myself is, I have no guilt where my children are concerned. They are all adults now. The choices they make in life are their own. They will have to answer for the silence and the lack of respect they have bestowed upon me for the last 7 plus years. Yes, it is very hard to live and breathe on a day to day basis without the people I gave birth to in my life. Their lack of communication or even discussion of the why is they feel the way they feel is more than I can bear some days. I must completely surrender all my heart's pain and anguish over to my Lord and Savior as the load is unbearable to carry anymore. I need to find peace with their decisions. But how...
The second way I can stop the negative beliefs that I have about myself is, does it really matter anymore? There are times in my life that I wish I could just snap my fingers and go back to a certain day. Life was much happier then...and yet, the struggle has been real since as far back as I can remember.
Who am I kidding? Does it really matter? Do I matter? Would my absence weigh heavily on certain loved ones? It is funny how the last seven years a certain person I love dearly has been absent from my life and the pain becomes more intense with each passing day. This person could be present, but they choose to be distant and non-existent to me on any level.
I have learned how to push my true feelings aside and not feel. But is that really helping me process the emotions I have? There is not a day that goes by that I do not second guess myself on the things I have done. The things I have put up with. The choices made...and yet, I feel as though I've been the one who has been held accountable to all of the crap life has ditched out when on many occasions I reacted to others doing to the ditching. Yet, I am expected to forgive and forget and act like nothing is wrong...yes, it matters to me. Yes, I matter! Yes, my heart hurts and YES, I have a right to feel the way I feel today. I suppose in the end it does really matter...I hope I am around to see it in the end.
The third way I can stop the negative beliefs that I have about myself is, holding myself accountable for my actions alone. Stop waiting on everyone else to own their accountability. They are only hurting themselves if they are not truthful.
Today, I need only to be responsible for my beliefs and be at peace with all my decisions. Once I can come to terms with this, everything else will fall into place as it should.
It takes a great deal of courage to put these thoughts in writing for others to see. I am finding though, as I am writing all kinds of emotions are being stirred up inside of me. I am an open book. I have nothing to hide. I refuse to hide behind the pain my heart feels any longer. I need to begin trusting people again. Trusting myself again. I need to begin honoring myself again even though others around me do not see my value. I am worthy to be loved. I am worthy to be beautiful. I am worthy to be valued as a person.

Throwback Thursday

Throwback Thursday

A wall in my apartment many years ago  - INSPIRATION
Today is Throwback Thursday and I thought I would turn the calendar back a few years with something different than a photograph of a person in days gone by.

The photo above was a wall in my living room when I lived in an apartment back in 2013. I had a friend paint it for me. "MUSIC is the voice of the soul".

Looking at a wall in my craft/genealogy room, I am reminded of cherished items that I have received over the course of the last several years.

When I was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer in 2013, my youngest daughter gave me this canvas along with a figurine representing Thyroid Cancer. Little did we know when she gave these precious gifts to me, that the cancer was almost Stage 4. Thankfully, I am in remission today.

Looking at the words depicted in this canvas, I have thought about each one of them many times and how they relate to my life. In the bottom right-hand corner, the word survivor is shown (it wraps around the canvas). I AM DEFINITELY A SURVIVOR. Not only from the Thyroid Cancer but from many other life journeys I have lived through. Abandonment, rape, sexual molestation, PTSD, Narcissistic people, brokenness, and the list could go on and on.

The word, clarity is shown towards the top of the canvas. At times, this word trips me up even though know who I am and what I want in life. Clarity does not always come easy. After a very traumatic mental health crisis in 2005 brought on by a family member, I became a Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) in Texas. I was one of the State Advocates for Mental Health at the State level in Austin. One of the criteria of becoming a Certified Peer Specialist was we had to be transparent in our recovery. In other words, we had to walk, talk, and live as a person in recovery daily - seven days a week. We had to be an open book. This came extremely easy for me - my mental health was situational - brought on by traumatic events all the back to my early childhood. BUT, talking about some of those life experiences did not come easy. I had to learn how to process them and let them be. Remember my past blogs when I have said the 'stumbling blocks' in life?  Some of these traumatic events were part of those stumbling blocks.

In 2019, I went through an exceedingly difficult season in life (which by the way is the prompt for today). My entire world came crashing down around me out of nowhere. There were not any signs. There were not any red flags. There sure wasn't a crystal ball. This season opened things for me that had been dealt with many years ago. I felt as though I did not have any clarity at all. I questioned everything I once knew about me as a person. Me as a mother. Me as a daughter. Me as a wife. Me as a friend. Me in general...

The word nurturing is shown on the canvas. I was not nurtured as a child. I did not have a book for dummies to teach me how to nurture my children. I grew up knowing right from wrong and in that statement, nurturing just happened.

I recall once my mom telling me I had a heart of ice. In all fairness, this was a protection mechanism I put in place so I would not be hurt again by those who had caused so much pain in my past. I would not let people get close to me on any level, mom included. Today, I am a caring person. I am a loving person not because it comes easy to me, but because I have had to work at it!

Another word on the canvas is believe. I believe in people. I trust what is said to be true. I trust a person until I learn otherwise. I want people to trust me. I want people to value me. I want people to believe in me. I want people to accept me for who I am today, NOT who I was yesterday or years ago. Remember those stumbling blocks? I am NOT the person I was back then...I did not like myself and neither would you. I believe in transformation and 2nd chances. Why? Because I am the evidence of both...

The word forgiving is also on the canvas. This word is huge for me. I learned the true meaning of this word in the 7th grade. Forgiveness is something I do not take for granted. The value of this word is like a million dollars to me. I value it. I believe in it. I honor it. I hold it in high regard. WHY? Because without forgiveness, people become bitter. People hold animosity. People become ugly and vile. I have seen firsthand on all accounts. People who have experienced true forgiveness walk in peace, speak of peace, nurture peace, and lives in peace not just occasionally, but seven days a week, 365 days a year. Do not get me wrong...we are all human and we have our downfalls, the difference is we know how to come back to forgiveness and the power of it.

I have forgiveness because of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. It is by His stripes I live and breathe today...NOT because of another human being. I can forgive because I have been forgiven.

The caveat to this is though...just because a person forgives, does not mean they trust! Trust is earned. Forgiveness is given.

Another item that hangs on my wall is something that was made for me by a dear friend. In her note to me, she said, "you show me how to be happy and you live in joy and I wanted to create something special for you".

Altered canvas made by a friend
Artistic talent runs in my family. From siblings to cousins to even my children - many of us are artistic. The next photograph is something my son made me a few years ago for Mother's Day.

The framed art says, "She is clothed with strength & dignity. She laughs without fear of the future. When she speaks her words are wise and she gives instruction with kindness".

Throwback Thursday today speaks volumes to me as I reminisce about the different seasons I was in when each one of these four things was brought forth in my life.
