"Name a Song About School"
Can you believe we are already on day 8 of the Song Challenge? Where is the time going...I suppose we are having fun reminiscing the different daily challenges of songs from yesterday. I know I am.
Some of the songs I am coming up with has surprised me a bit. Like the one, I'm going to share today...
I recall in my teen years watching the movie musical, Grease. A few months ago, my husband and I watched it again. When I saw the prompt for day 8, name a song about school - I knew which song I wanted to write about.
Beauty School Dropout is a song from the musical Grease. (Wikipedia)

In 1978, Frankie Avalon filled the role of the Teen Angel who appeared to Frenchy (played by Didi Conn) after she had dropped out of beauty school. She was frustrated with her teachers. She asks for a guardian angel. The phantom teen angel descends from the heavens, dressed all in white. The Teen Angel begins singing to Frenchy that she lacked work ethic and suggested she return to high school where she might eventually qualify for a career as a stenographer later in life.
Your story, sad to tell
A teenager ne'er do well
Most mixed up, non-deliquent on the block
Your future's so unclear now
What's left of your career now?
Can't even get a trade-in on your smock
angels singing lalalalal lalala lalala lala lalala
Beauty School Dropout
No graduation day for you
Beauty School Dropout
Missed your midterms and flunked shampoo
Well at least you could have taken time
To wash and clean your clothes up
After spending all that dough to have
The doctor fix your nose up!
Baby get moving
Why keep your feeble hopes alive?
What are you proving?
You've got the dream, but not the drive!
If you go for your diploma, you could join a steno pool
Turn in your teasin' comb, and go back to high school
(the song continues...)
after hearing the phantom teen idol completely, Frenchy silently refuses and walks away.
As I sit here and write this post, it's interesting to me that this song sounds like the phantom teen idol was mocking and bullying/making fun of Frenchy for dropping out of Beauty School. It is ironic how in today's world, people give up their dreams so easily because of the lack of support from friends and family.
I would have given anything to fulfill my music scholarship back in the day, but home life was such I needed to escape it. Yes, it's a decision I regret today...but I don't regret the journey I've had since. There have been many life lessons learned. I wonder how many give up because they feel there is no encouragement to follow their dreams?
Beauty School Dropout was just a movie - - yet, we hear of similar stories on a daily basis. It's real-life...be the difference! YOU CAN DO IT!!!
Don't let frustration or negativity be the reason you walk away from your dreams. Dig deep and fight for what you want to achieve in life...if people are telling you to give up, dig even deeper. Become resilient and work towards the goals and dreams you've set out to achieve.
I BELIEVE IN YOU!!!

I was more of a fan of Sam Cooke and Herman's Hermits- Don't know much about history...
ReplyDelete"Beauty school dropout, go back to high school..." That was one of my fave movies!! I have seen it so many times! And coincidentally, I am in a sort of beauty school right now. I'm freshening up my color analysis training and am about to dive into all things makeup, too, to add that to my offerings. Don't think I am in any danger of being a dropout! :)
ReplyDeleteWould you believe I never say Grease!! Butnindo remember that song, perfect for today's prompt!
