My Sweet Lord

The daily prompt today in the Song Challenge hosted by The Mommies Review/Glenda Cates was name a song from 1970 that I liked

"My Sweet Lord" was and still is one of my all-time favorite songs. It was sung by an English musician named George Harrison. The song was on his triple album All Things Must Pass and released in 1970. The song was also released as a single.

My Sweet Lord was Harrison's first as a solo artist and topped the charts worldwide. It was the best selling single in the UK in 1971. In America and Britain, the song was the number-one single by an ex-Beatle.

Later in the 1970s, "My Sweet Lord" was at the center of a heavily publicized copyright infringement suit due to being similar to the Ronnie Mack song, "He's So Fine", a 1963 hit for the New York girl group, The Chiffons. In 1976, Harrison was found to have subconsciously plagiarized the song, the verdict had repercussions throughout the music industry.

Harrison performed the song "My Sweet Lord" at the Concert for Bangladesh in August 1971, it remains the most popular composition from his ex-Beatle career. The song reached number one in Britain for a second time when released in 2002, two months after Harrison's death. (Wikipedia)

According to George Harrison's interview, he wrote "My Sweet Lord" as praise of the Hindu god Krishna. Harrison was raised Catholic but later in life converted to Hinduism. The song's lyrics are both inclusive and provocative.   They detail Harrison's desire to be close to God and include contrasting refrains of the Jewish/Christian "Hallelujah" which means "Praise God" and the Hindu term "Hare Krishna" denotes devotion to Lord Krishna.

At the end of the infamous lawsuit, Harrison was forced to pay Bright Tunes some of the proceeds from his album, All Things Must Pass and 75%  of the money he earned from "My Sweet Lord,"  totaling $1.6 million dollars.

The man was a genius when it came to music and I enjoyed his music.
