National Hoagie Day

May 4, 2020

It's National Hoagie Day

It may go by many names, but National Hoagie Day is the day that set aside as the hero of a sandwich!
The Hoagie has many alias names. Some that you may recognize are sub, grinder, Italian, torpedo, or baguette. It is made on a long Italian roll or French bread, filled with a variety of meats, cheeses, vegetables and, other condiments such as spices and sauces.

Have you ever wondered where the name came from? According to the National Day Calendar,  in 1953, the Italians were working the World War I era shipyard in Philadelphia, known as Hog Island. They introduced the sandwich by placing meats, cheeses, and a few other things in between two slices of bread. It was referred to as the "Hog Island" sandwich. They later shorted the name by calling it a "Hoagie".

If you are wondering what to eat for lunch or supper, you might consider building yourself a Hoagie sandwich. I'm making myself hungry, so I may just have to go build one right now.

Enjoy!
